"No matter how calmly you try to referee, parenting will eventually produce bizarre behavior, and I'm not talking about the kids." - Billy Cosby
Welcome! This portion of the 6th grade wiki is dedicated to parents and the resources I think may be helpful. This is an ongoing list that I will add to throughout the year, and if you come across something in your own searches you think would be advantageous to everyone, please let me know, and I will add it.
Language Arts Resources: Purdue University, though far inferior to Indiana, has a great online writing lab with tips on style, grammar, mechanics, etc. SparkNotes, an online literature study guide, is a great review chapter summaries, big ideas, discussion questions, etc. I strongly suggest using such a tool for struggling readers and/or students facing a challenging text. Audible is a wonderful site that allows you to download audio texts of novels onto your laptop and/or iPod. Listening to an audio version of the text while reading helps readers stay focused, comprehend, and maintain an appropriate pace. Active Readingis a very important strategy for 6th graders and anyone who is reading for comprehension. While we will review and use specific stratgies in class, this site is a fairly good introduction to the basic concept. FreeRice is a wonderful site for practicing and learning new vocabulary words, and for each word students correctly identify, 20 grains of rice are donated to the UN Food World Program. Renzulli is an amazing program that offers online enrichment and support. See Mr. Clark for full details concerning uses, log-in info, etc. Schools Attuned is an education training program based on the latest brain science that emphasizes using students' strengths to help combat struggles. This program highly influences the curriculum and educational philosophy of Lausanne. This link will direct you to the parent portion of the program. Atomic Learning is a wonderful technology resource that among other things includes literally hundreds of video tutorials on different computer programs & methods. Once logged-in, choose "Training Library" and then "Technology Skills".

The Campaign for Real Beauty is a great resource for parents concerning issues of adolescent self - esteem and popular images of beauty and health.
Technology & the Future: Daniel Pink is the author of A Whole New Mind, required summer reading for all Lausanne faculty and staff. In the book, Pink discusses the changes globalization will have on our economy, work force, technology, etc. This is a link to a short speech where Pink summarizes his argument. The second link is a short video I made about the book and its impact on education Fascinating stuff! TED.com is a series of video lectures from today's greatest minds concerning everything from education to economics and video games to the enviorment. Digg.com is hard to describe, but it is essentially an online meeting place of ideas, stories, podcasts, etc. that people have found and "digged". The site contains some very interesting information, but more so, is a great example of how technology is revolutionizing content and media. Google New is the best site for the latest news report an almost any topic. Organized by time of publication, you ae sure to get the latest news and is also a great way to instantly review multiple perspectives.
